Benkovac

Benkovac is a town in Dalmatia, located about 30 kilometres from Zadar. It has good transportation links as it sits at the crossroads between the road which leads from Zadar towards Knin and the road which goes from Lika towards the sea.

In the area surrounding Benkovac, there are many valuable cultural and historical monuments dating from antique times to the most important parts of the medieval period and today (the remains of the antique and medieval towns of Asseria, Nedinum, Corinium, as well as the Perušić fortress, Islam and others).

Near Benkovac, in the village of Šopot, there is a stone monument from the 9thcentury on which the name of the Croatian Prince Branimir was engraved for the first time. Benković Castle stands proudly on the hill above the town, a former medieval fortress which was built in the 15th century by the Croatian noble family Benković, after which the town is probably named. Today, there is a museum in the castle, and below the castle, in the town, there are the Catholic churches of Sv. Ante (St. Anthony) and Mala Gospa (Nativity of the Virgin Mary) as well as the Orthodox church of Sv. Jovan (St. John).
