Slavonia
Slavonia

Come the harvest time this song reverberates through the air, precious folks costumes are taken out of old wooden chests and age-old customs brought to life – all in order to preserve the Slavonia as it used to be for the future of Slavonia. Take a walk through the Old Town of Osijek, visit the traditional villages of Baranja and the Kopački rit Nature Park, go mountaineering, enjoy the many rich thermal spring. And wherever you find yourself, you are going to be met with a warm welcome and friendship so typical of Slavonia and its people.

Shaped by the force of the mighty rivers Drava, Danube, Sava and Ilova, Slavonia is a mythical region that for centuries has guarded its treasures. It is characterised by the wide, endless expanse of the golden Pannonia plains, and by rivers that gave birth to the flood areas, which, in turn, provide an ideal habitat for the now centuries-old forestsof common oak (Quercus robur) as well as for more than 2000 biological species. The soil of Slavonia has been tilled by human hand for over 8000 years. Ever since this part of the continent rose from the Pannonian Sea some 370 million years ago - the geological history of which is best told through the eruptive rocks of the bulky Papuk mountain that sits like a crown upon this noble land - the fertile Slavonian plains have been a promised land.

Heritage

The largest urban centre in Slavonia is Osijek and is dominated by a famous fortress. In a similar way, Slavonski Brod is also dominated by the largest baroque fortress in Europe that was built in the 18th century. As the largest Slavonian metropolis and a university town, Osijek is at the same time a town that has nurtured two Croatian Nobel prize winners: Ružička and Prelog. If you are interested in Slavonian castles, then for the beginning, start from the palace at Požega and Pejačević castle in Našice, then go on to the baroque buildings Prandau Mailath and Prandau Normann in Valpovo and at Donji Miholjac you can reach the baroque castle of Eltz in Vukovar, as well as the Odeschalchi renaissance castle in Ilok where the famous Italian Franciscan Ivan Kapistran was buried. For horse lovers, there is the famous Lipizzaner horse farm, where Lipizzaner horses have been bred  since 1806.The largest urban centre in Slavonia is Osijek and is dominated by a famous fortress. Gastronomy

The Slavonian dining table groans most of all with tasty ham, Kulen sausage and Kulen's sis sausage whilst in the typical Slavonian pot there is “grah čobanac [shepherd’s bean stew] and “fiš paprikas” [fish stew with hot red pepper] that is washed down with the not to be missed glass of plum schnapps. There are many good quality wines on offer here such as Ilok’s Traminac, Kutjevo’s Riesling as well as Graševina. In terms of sweets, there are “saljenaci” made in a traditional way from pork fat, different types of pastries filled with apples or walnuts or one cake with a very unique name “Poderane gaće“ [ripped underpants], whose funny name is in total contrast with its fine taste.
